ING boosts holdings in Peru

Dutch insurance group ING has increased its stake in two Peruvian pension fund managers, AFP Integra and ING Fondos, after acquiring stock from minority shareholders.
The transaction has a combined value of US$ 55 million, and hands ING an 80 per cent share in each company.

Antilles must be taken off the black lists

State Secretary Alex Rosaria (Finance, PNP) urges Taxation and Customs Union Directorate-General (Taxud) of the European Union to take the Antilles off the list of tax-paradises as soon as possible. Rosaria considers it wrongfully that the EU-countries Poland, Italy, Portugal, and Greece still have the Antilles on these so-called black lists.

Adriaens wants Antilles to have a say in ITU

In order to come up better for her interests, the Antilles would love to participate independently in Conferences of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
Minister Maurice Adriaens (Transport and Communication, FOL) told Houlin Zhao and Malcolm Johnson, respectively vice-secretary-general and director of ITU’s Standardization Bureau, world’s oldest telecommunication-standards organization that nowadays is part of the United Nations.

Dutch same-sex couples have the same rights as Dutch Caribbean opposite-married couples

According to a recent court ruling in the Netherlands Antilles (Court of First Instance, 17 July 2008), a same-sex couple that was married in the Netherlands and subsequently moved to the Netherlands Antilles (Curacao), has the same rights under Netherlands Antilles law (or Aruba law as the case may be) as Netherlands Antilles couples as far as health insurance is concerned. Santander / ABN Amro closes in Brazil

The largest cash M&A transaction ever – the purchase of Dutch bank ABN Amro by a consortium led by the Royal Bank of Scotland – has closed in Brazil.
Uría Menéndez led the global team for Banco Santander, the consortium member which bagged ABN Amro’s Latin American assets, with Uria’s affiliate Dias Carneiro Advogados leading the Brazilian work.

Enkele weken zijn achter de rug met een extreem hoogtepunt, en een absoluut dieptepunt. En daartussen nog wat meer, hier in de West. Het hoogtepunt: Ingrid Betancourt, en met haar 14 anderen, zijn verlost uit de jungle van Colombia. Middels een infiltratie in de rebellenorganisatie FARC wist het Colombiaanse leger 15 gijzelaars in vrijheid te brengen. Zonder geweld, zonder mishandeling, zonder maar één schot.

VBC urges fast amendment of fiscal law

The Curaçao Trade and Industry Association (Vereniging Bedrijfsleven Curaçao - VBC) is wondering why Parliament could not have interrupted their recess to put through the amendment of the fiscal law. “There is plenty of reason to proceed to this amendment due to the positive effects for employment, the generation of bills of exchange, more tax revenue for the government, and bigger activity for the international financial and business service sector”, said the VBC.

Charges brought against Debrot

Charges were pressed with the Public Prosecutor against former trader and advisor for international bunker activities at Curoil, Jason Debrot. The Board of Directors (RvC) wants to recoup losses for the damage that Debrot had supposedly caused the Curoil with his trading activities.

VBC fears for a set back in tourism

The worldwide economic development can work out negatively for Curacao. Especially the constantly increasing prices of air fare, through which the Dutch tourist will have to pay 200 euro more per person this winter season for a return Curacao from Amsterdam, won’t have a positive influence on the tourism.

De Arubaanse kogel is door de kerk. Ook Aruba stemt in met een Gemeenschappelijk Hof van Justitie - een soort Gerechtshof in de West - voor alle koninkrijksgebieden in de Caribische zee. En nog wel te regelen bij consensus rijkswet, en niet - zoals geruime tijd door Aruba werd voorgestaan - bij samenwerkingsregeling tussen de (nieuwe) landen in de West. Het lijkt mij een goede keuze.

CIFA seminar

The International Fiscal Association (“IFA”) convention for 2008 will be held in Brussels from August 31st till September 3th. During this event, CIFA will also organize a mini-seminar on September 1st. Marketing study for offshore sector

Secretary of State Alex Rosaria (Finance, PNP) starts next week with a study for a marketing approach for the international financial service sector (offshore) of the Antilles. Also the local image of this sector will come up for discussion during this study. The study is coordinated by the Social Economic Faculty of the UNA and will be published early next year.

Suspicious money transactions dropped in the Netherlands

Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Dutch police Corps established in her 2007 annual report that the number of suspicious money transactions from the Netherlands to the Neth.Antilles has dropped considerably, but on the other hand, the number of unusual transactions increased slightly. The drop of the suspicious money transactions has put the Antilles on the 4th place in the category suspicious flow of money from the Netherlands.

Governments have a 2.4 million debt with Soab

 As per December 31, 2007, the Government Accountant Bureau (Soab) had an unpaid claim of 2.4 million guiders with several of the governments and government agencies. The claim is regarding payments not paid by the clients. In her annual report, Soab urges the governments to start paying the debt as soon as possible.
