Inspectorate closes Karakter St. Maarten for ‘detrimental hygienic conditions’

PHILIPSBURG--The Inspectorate of Public Health, Social Development and Labour VSA has closed popular beach-side restaurant and bar Karakter for “detrimental hygienic conditions,” amongst other reasons.

Inspectors swooped down on the facility last week Thursday, January 21, and after an inspection closed the establishment for the infringements found.

Inspector General Earl Best told The Daily Herald on Sunday that it was not the Inspectorate’s intention to “put people out of business.” However, he said that if the circumstances were “bad” and required immediate action, the Inspectorate had “to protect the health of our citizens and also of the many tourists.”

“We have to understand that it doesn’t do much good to the businesses and economy of St. Maarten if tourists or international health institutions provide negative information on the risk for acquiring diseases such as gastroenteritis or legionella in St Maarten,” he said.

Best said that based on “detrimental hygienic conditions that pose a serious threat to one’s health, and lack of Food Handlers’ Certificates, Karakter was closed and will remain closed until the multiple violations have been properly remedied. Besides the public health violations, they were also in violation of labour regulations.”

He said the establishment had not yet rectified its infringements for reopening by Friday, January 22.

“No other restaurants have been closed recently for the same violations. We encourage the community to inform the Inspectorate if they encounter conditions anywhere that pose a risk to one’s health,” he said.
