Suspect stone thrower Nachtwacht arrested

The 36-year old man suspected of throwing the stone which seriously wounded the 33 year old Carlos Moreno on the 26th of June has been arrested this morning at his home. The incident happened during riots in the Nieuwestraat street in Pietermaai, at the Café ‘De Nachtwacht’.

Debt claims government increased on BNA balance

In the month of June the combination of the increased debt claims on the government  and the decrease of the obligations to the government (7.8 million guilders) resulted in a deterioration of the net position of the government at the Bank.

21 months conviction for managing director Mido Trust

Minguelita Lourens (61), managing director of Mido Trust & Management NV, was sentenced to 36 months last week of which 15 months are conditional. Between the 1st of January 2003 and the 31st of December 2004 she embezzled more than 93 million guilders from her clients. A large sum of the money is still missing.

BNA: Positive future through cooperation

President-director Emsley Tromp of the Bank of the Netherlands Antilles (BNA) qualifies the growth of the Antillean economy as ‘robust’ for the year 2007. The growth figure of 3,7 percent which scores a realistic gross national product (GNP) hasn’t been this high since 1994.

Antillean commercial banks fairly healthy

From a global point of view, Antillean commercial banks have had a good year. During the presentation of the annual statistics of 2007 last week, president chief executive Emsley Tromp of the Bank of the Dutch Antilles (BNA) said the local banks to be ‘healthy’.

Rabobank creates agricultural fund for Latin America

Dutch bank Rabobank International has launched a sustainable agriculture fund for Latin America.
The Rabo Agri Fund was set up to improve access to local finance for cooperatives or companies buying raw material from small producers in the region’s agricultural sector.

Legal controversy for quay

Curaçao Ports Authority (CPA) has sent the Curacao Dry-dock Company (CDM) a 30-million guilder demand note. The amount is for past due quay charges and lease of the so-called EEG- quay that both CDM and CPA lay claim to.

Island is spending more

In May of this year, the island territory of Curacao has spent 13.7 guilders more than was budgeted. This appears from this month’s financial report of the island territory. The government assumed a disbursement of 74.8 millions for that month, but the actual spending was 88.5 millions, a difference of 18.3 percent.

The proposed UNASUR court

On 23 May this year, the heads of 12 Latin American nations reached agreement establishing UNASUR - the Union of South American Nations. This is a significant development that could pave the way for further institutional reform in the region. UNASUR evolves from the South American Community, established by the Cuzco Declaration of 2004.

The Governing Body is behind on lots of issues in their own government program. The BC has not managed to present the document ‘Perception for the Land Curacao’ on July 2. The government program is still assuming that the new status of the Land Curacao is going to be realized this year.

One administration for Court and Registry

In anticipation of the Statutory Law Joint Court, the court and the registry are going over into one organization with an integrated administration, in which the executives of the Antillean and Aruban registries will take seat with the presiding judge and the coordinating judges of several islands, mentioned presiding judge Lisbeth Hoefdraad in the foreword of the 2007 annual report.

Fake Timberland products on Curacao

“The only stores that are allowed to sell original Timberland-products are the stores on Curacao who have a license to do so (Angelo’s, Timberland and Boolchand’s)” says Carine Jansch of VanEps Kunneman Van Doorne on behalf of her client in an add, “Shoes and clothing that are sold in other stores are fake. Anyone who imports, trades, sells or has in store fake Timberland-products risks to be prosecuted.”

Judge: "Isla too late with creative solutions"

On the last session-day of a dragging civil case that lasted year-and-a-half, the Isla suddenly comes with creative solutions for the future; solutions that may reduce the sulphur-dioxide-, and soot emission. Judge Rik van Unen was clearly dissatisfied that the Isla has not come up with this earlier and that the parties self have not tried to come with a solution.

Isla's data more favourable than of the judge"s experts

The Isla uses meteorological information for their calculations, which lead to lower values and require fewer far-reached measures to comply with the sulphur dioxide standards, observed the Advisory Administrative Law Foundation (StAB-Stichting Advisering Bestuursrechtspraak) from The Hague in the so-called ‘expert report’, which was drawn up by order of the judge. This report was this morning at the forefront in the civil case of the Humanitarian Care foundation and inhabitants against the refinery.
