BES signs agreement on new terms of employment for civil servants

KRALENDIJK — The agreement on the new terms of employment for civil servants working at the public bodies was signed yesterday on Bonaire.

The Public Bodies Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius represented by respectively Deputy Burney El Hage, Lieutenant Governor Jonathan Johnson and Gerald Berkel; the Ministry Caribbean Netherlands represented by Sybren van Dam (director RCN) and representatives of the trade union for Government personnel (Abvo) signed this agreement. All parties expressed their satisfaction on the accomplished result. The agreement was signed yesterday at Restaurant Capriccio on Bonaire. It regards a package of measures with sensible income developments and an important step towards harmonization of terms of employment for all civil servants.

RCN-director Van Dam: “We’ve held intensive consultations with the trade unions the past months and all parties are proud of the result. I’m especially proud that we’ve reached a collective result with the government as employer and the trade unions.”
Also Deputy El Hage applauded the good work of all parties at the negotiation table and expressed his satisfaction that this result was accomplished in hard times experienced worldwide. “I’m convinced this is a good package for the civil servants. I believe everyone will be very happy when they learn of the package. I am especially satisfied this was accomplished in a difficult period.”

Although St. Eustatius is placed under higher financial supervision, the co-signing of the agreement by this island should be seen as a commitment, says Lieutenant Governor Berkel. “The Island Council will do everything possible to ensure that all our civil servants keep up with civil servants on the other islands. I’ve been authorized by the Island Council of St. Eustatius to co-sign this agreement with the condition that we do our utmost to guarantee in the budget of 2012 that we observe this agreement,” says Berkel. On November 23rd, the negotiation agreement for the terms of employment of the civil servants in Caribbean Netherlands was reached on Saba. The completion of the subsequent colleague consultation has resulted in the official signing of the agreement on terms of employment.
