‘Brutal robber’ gets three years for extortion, firearm possession

PHILIPSBURG--The Court of First Instance on Wednesday sentenced the main suspect in a case of tourist-mugging, burglaries, firearm possession and threats made against police officers to three years.

The Prosecutor had called for eight years against “brutal robber” Janssel M. Haddocks (23) but as it did not find theft with violence proven the Court deemed three years sufficient punishment for extortion and firearm possession.

Together with co-defendants Reini E. Dutreuil (20) and Melvin Marlin (27), Haddocks was held responsible for involvement in the mugging of a tourist in the vicinity of Isle de Sol yacht club on January 27, around 3:30am.

A group of five men posing as “Good Samaritans” had offered their help in charging the dead car battery of the man’s car. However, they demanded money and US $160, and the tourist’s bag, which contained a laptop and tablet, personal documents and an amount in Ukrainian currency were stolen.

Marlin claimed he had not taken anything and Haddocks said he was sleeping and had not touched anybody.

Dutreuil admitted he had taken the bag from the car. Two banknotes in Ukrainian currency were found during a search of his house.

The Court found insufficient evidence that Haddocks and Marlin had been actively involved in the robbery of a tourist, but found extortion proven. Haddocks was also found guilty of possession of a firearm.

Dutreuil, who was facing seven years, was sentenced to 36 months, six of which were suspended, on three years’ probation, with Parole Board supervision.

He was also acquitted of involvement in the tourist’s robbery. The other charges, including two burglaries, committed on January 22, 2014, and on July 31, 2014, were found proven.

Dutreuil was also punished for punching an eyewitness to the tourist’s robbery in his face during the Court hearing of May 27.

Marlin was sentenced to 18 months suspended, on three years’ probation, with 240 hours of community service. The Prosecutor had requested two years’ suspended, on three years’ probation, with 180 hours of community service, for the truck driver by profession.
