Mother of 14-year-old girl angry over 3-month verdict

PHILIPSBURG--The man who grabbed and tried to pull a fourteen-year-old girl away from her parents while they were on vacation in St. Maarten was sentenced to three months in prison, but remains free.

According to Staten Island news Website silive.com , her mother Laura Warraich is extremely upset.

Alvero Antonio Alexander van Putten (25), residing in St. Maarten, was found guilty of threatening 14-year-old Warraich on Captain Hodge Pier on August 6. The Court of First Instance acquitted him of ill-treatment. Van Putten failed to appear for his hearing.

"Three months is ridiculous. That's like a slap in our face," Warraich's mother said in a telephone interview with the news website on Monday, September 10. "He intended to do something. Maybe the next girl won't be as fortunate as my daughter."
The mother also said her daughter's arm had been bruised and the American consulate office in St. Maarten had told her Van Putten was expected to turn himself in and was not allowed off the island in the meantime.

Warraich's mother said she intended to pursue the matter further with St. Maarten prosecutors.

The 14-year-old and her family were in the midst of stepping off a water taxi when she said a man had grabbed her and tried to pull her away from her parents, whispering "I'll see you later, princess" in her ear. She managed to pull away and alert her parents and, after ensuring her safety, relatives chased after Van Putten and surrounded him until he was arrested by St. Maarten police.

The family had been on a cruise in the Caribbean as part of a reunion gathering. The family had been told that Van Putten was mentally challenged. Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos confirmed to The Daily Herald that Van Putten indeed was mentally challenged.

"It all happened so quick. I still can't believe it," the 14-year-old said. "I still want to take trips with my family, but I think this will always stay with me."
