Four Caribbean start-ups among 40 selected for global conference

HELSINKI, Finland--In just over three weeks, four Caribbean entrepreneurs will travel to the frozen Nordic city of Helsinki, Finland, to participate in Europe’s largest tech entrepreneur conference, SLUSH Global Impact Accelerator (GIA) and SLUSH 2016.

Crimebot, Bookfusion, Global Learning Technologies and We Green Army were among 15 Caribbean Tech start-up teams that competed in the virtual PitchIT Caribbean/SLUSH 2016 Regional Selection competition in August.

They were shortlisted for the opportunity to get one of the 40 available start-up spots in SLUSH GIA 2016. While only three start-ups were to be shortlisted from the event and submitted to the SLUSH selection committee, there was a third-place tie and all four were submitted.

After a second round of interviews and review, all four Caribbean start-ups were selected to participate. PitchIT Caribbean is the only one of 21 hubs to have four start-ups selected for SLUSH.

This is the second year that PitchIT Caribbean is serving as a SLUSH Hub. Last year, two Jamaican start-ups Niritech and Transcel Limited became the first Caribbean start-ups to participate in SLUSH.

SLUSH GIA 2016, which runs from November 22 to December 2, brings impactful entrepreneurs from emerging markets to Helsinki to accelerate their business, attract additional financing and make an even greater impact on their societies and beyond.
