Convicted paedophile appeals his sentence

PHILIPSBURG--Convicted paedophile Emanuel York, who was described in court as a "digital child molester," has appealed his conviction, Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Tineke Kamps has confirmed.

The St. Maarten National Basketball Association (SXMNBA) official was sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Court of First Instance on Wednesday, January 7. He was found guilty of the rapes of two teenage boys whom he had groomed on the Internet.

The sentence was one year less than that demanded by the prosecutor. However, York's lawyer had pleaded for her client's full acquittal.

York now awaits a date for his case to be heard by the Joint Court of Justice, which sits in St. Maarten once a month. There will not be any closure just yet for the young men York has been convicted of raping, as it normally takes around four months for appeal cases to be heard.

In the meantime, York has started his prison sentence.
