Judge extends detention of man who shot taxi driver

PHILIPSBURG--A judge of instruction on Monday extended the pre-trial detention of murder suspect A.A.A. (35), who gunned down taxi driver Riley “Chiney” Richardson in a driveway on Peach Road in South Reward last week Thursday, May 21.

Prosecutor Tineke Kamps told The Daily Herald on Monday that the judge of instruction had confirmed that the suspect’s detention and pre-trial detention were “lawful, so the suspect stays in custody.”

Kamps said A., who is a fireman, had turned himself in on the night of the fatal shooting. “Since the investigation is ongoing I do not want to comment on the content of his statement,” Kamps said when asked whether A. had confessed to the crime and what he indicated had led to the shooting.

Police spokesperson Inspector Ricardo Henson told just after the incident that the shooting had followed a dispute between Richardson and A. that was said to have begun earlier in the day. The reason for the dispute could not be ascertained.
