Armed bandits get away with US $70,000 in cash

PHILIPSBURG - The Western Union office in Cole Bay was the latest business targeted by bandits, close to 10:30am Saturday. Two men dressed in black with motorbike helmets stormed via a back entrance into the cashier’s pit of the business, demanding money.

The robbers managed to get away with more than US $70,000 in cash from four cashiers who were told to lock themselves in the restroom.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police spokesman Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson. “Much detail regarding this robbery is still unavailable,” he said.

According to an eyewitness, “I was waiting on my turn when I saw men enter via the DHL side. They were talking to the girls waving a knife in one hand and a gun in the other. The other man focused his attention on the security officer that was at the entrance. He wanted everybody to get on the ground and not make a sound, but the security guard did not listen.

“All of a sudden I saw him grab one of the customers and he said he would kill him if he does not cooperate. He lay down on the floor and they took his radio and phone from him. I was so scared for my life. They took the money and put it in bags and started to shoot at the security, but thank God they did not catch him.

“They ran out the front door. I could not believe what just happened. Took about 10 minutes before the police got there and they asked what happened and tried to go look for the guys, but it was too late. The ambulance came and they helped the lady they had at knifepoint and the poor security guard,” the witness told The Daily Herald shortly after the incident.

The four cashiers were traumatised by the encounter, as gunshot sounds roared through the building while they were locked in the restroom.

The police have not made any arrests yet. It is not yet clear to police how the robbers fled the building. Detectives collected statements from witnesses at the scene. The Forensics Department retrieved what evidence they could from the money carrier business.
