Advice on legislation 10-10-10

The Island Territory of Bonaire has requested the law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, having its principal office in Curaçao, to render advice on the island regulations after the constitutional changes necessary for the discontinuation.

The project’s object is to adjust, supplement or convert prevailing local regulations. The Netherlands government will draft new regulations for certain subjects. On October 10, the Netherlands Antilles are discontinued. Bonaire, Statia, and Saba (BES) will become public bodies of the Netherlands. “Needless to say, much of the legislative work will have to be done before the intended transition date of October 10. The term of the assignment is deliberately longer, because certain subjects can also be handled until January 1, 2011 or even later,” according to the firm. Instructions for this project financed by “USONA” (Executive Body Foundation Development Netherlands Antilles) were formally given by the Island Secretary of Bonaire, Nerry Gonzalez. The everyday management is in the hands of Bert Nijland, the head of the Department of Judicial and General Affairs (“JAZ”). On behalf of the contracted party, Mark Kater will act as project manager. VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne will also make a specialized team of lawyers available, of which Frank Kunneman and Mayesi Hammoud of the principal office in Curaçao will be part. Nijland: “It is necessary that we do this job and we are very happy with the external, professional assistance financed by USONA.” Kunneman: “We invest in Bonaire and consider this project a chance to remain directly involved in the developments. It is a challenge to get the job done, but we work gladly and well together with the JAZ team.”

The firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne is experienced in legislative processes. It has already drafted several Acts for the country the Netherlands Antilles and the Island Territory of Curaçao.
