Parliamentary inquiry into Public Prosecutor wiretapping telephone lines

WILLEMSTAD - The announced parliamentary inquiry will possibly include the Public Prosecutor (OM) wiretapping telephone lines, Chairman of the Parliament, Ivar Asjes (PS) wrote in a letter to PNP-parliamentarian Humphrey Davelaar.

It was already known that the parliamentary inquiry would focus on the functioning of the Intelligence Service Curaçao (VDC) and predecessor Intelligence Service Netherlands Antilles (VNA).The possible inclusion of this aspect in the parliamentary inquiry is supposedly based on ‘advice from the Council of Seniors yesterday’, Chairman of the Parliament Asjes wrote to Davelaar. In his letter to Asjes, Davelaar asked when the parliamentary inquiry would begin. The PNP-member wanted the chairman to guarantee that nothing would prevent the parliamentary inquiry from taking place.

Asjes replied by stating he had already had contact with the Registrar of the Parliament last night requesting the latter to present a written proposal for the inquiry. Asjes assumes the Parliament will discuss the extent of the parliamentary inquiry on June 1st at the latest.

In reply to Asjes’ letter, Davelaar stated that after the proposal was discussed in the Committee of Justice and then in the Central Committee of the Parliament, it would eventually be discussed in a public meeting, where decisions are taken on the budget, the number of members and the order.

 
OM gaat snelrecht hanteren

WILLEMSTAD - Het Openbaar Ministerie gaat snelrecht toepassen, in het Papiaments Hustisia Rapido (HuRa). Dit is een procedure waarin strafzaken buiten de rechtszaal om beslist worden.

Het betreft voorwaardelijke sepots voor personen die hiervoor in aanmerking komen. Het OM lichtte vanmiddag tijdens een persconferentie het principe van HuRa toe.

Dat principe is min of meer afgeleid van het snelrecht bij het OM in Nederland. Het is een methode om minderjarige en meerderjarige verdachten snel en efficiënt te straffen voor bepaalde, lichtere vergrijpen als bijvoorbeeld winkeldiefstal.

In de meeste gevallen wordt de verdachte voor de keuze gesteld om of binnen korte tijd een opgelegd geldbedrag (transactie) te betalen, of later op een zitting van de rechtbank te staan (dagvaarding). Met dit systeem kan het OM feiten veel sneller afhandelen.
