Plans of Approach extended two years

THE HAGUE--The Dutch Parliament has been informed of the decision of the Kingdom Council of Ministers to extend the Plans of Approach for Curaçao and St. Maarten by two years until October 10, 2014.

Dutch caretaker Minister of Interior Affairs and Kingdom Relations Liesbeth Spies forwarded to the First and Second Chambers on Friday the Royal Decree to extend the General Measure Cooperation Agreement guaranteeing the federal tasks of Curaçao and St. Maarten in the area of Justice, among other fields.

The Kingdom Council of Ministers approved the two-year extension of the general measure by Royal Decree on May 11. The extension was agreed to with the Prime Ministers of Curaçao and St. Maarten in a ministerial consultation.

Various Plans of Approach, especially for Curaçao, will last longer than the originally agreed-on time span of two years, explained Spies in an Explanatory Note that accompanied the Royal Decree.

Other Plans of Approach for Curaçao and St. Maarten probably also would not be completed on the original date on which the General Measure would have been withdrawn – October 10, 2012, Spies clarified.

Initially it was agreed that the General Measure of October 10, 2010, would be annulled by Royal Decree two years after it had gone into effect. The General Measure offers the possibility for extension by two years. The General Measure prescribes that the extension by Royal Decree should be made public at least two months before the initial term lapses on August 10, 2012. The Royal Decree had to be presented no later than August 1, 2012.
