VBC: Governor did correct thing

WILLEMSTAD -- Governor Goedgedrag made the right decision to appoint a person to form an interim-cabinet at the request of the majority of Parliament, the board of The Curaçao Trade and Industry Association VBC wrote in an open letter.

The employers' organisation seriously regretted that "several parliamentarians and administrators refused to observe the basic principles of democracy and good corporate governance. On the contrary: they have the nerve to accuse those who rightly have an own opinion and act accordingly of incorrect and anti-democratic actions.

"Since when is it considered undemocratic to meet the wish of the majority of parliament? Disrespecting the latter led to riding roughshod over democracy and to chaos."

VBC criticised the actions of -meanwhile ousted- Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte (MFK) in this matter.

"The will of a parliamentary majority is decisive in a parliamentary democracy and this also applies for the cabinet. Based on this the defence of the outgoing prime minister against the governor's decision, with due respect for the numerous legal arguments made, wasn't very convincing.

"To accuse a governor who acts according to the principles of a democratic constitutional state of prejudice attests to little respect for the function."

VBC had urged the Schotte cabinet to act on the motions of no-confidence as adopted by a majority of Parliament.
"A call to resist, which could lead to disturbing the public order, is fundamentally wrong. The damage Curaçao has already suffered owing to this constitutional crisis would get worse. Curaçao will certainly not benefit from this," stated VBC before the interim cabinet was sworn in and the MFK/PS/MAN government left office.
