Elections Curacao: Pueblo Soberano the big winner, PAIS the big surprise

WILLEMSTAD - On 19 October 2012 a new election for parliament was held in Curaçao. Eight parties participated in the election and a total of 116,857 persons 18 years & older were eligible to vote.

 
Pueblo Soberano (PS), led by Mr. Helmin M. Wiels, is the big winner of the election with 19,716 votes, good for 5 seats. The party of Mr. Alex Rosaria, PAIS, was the big surprise with 15,395 votes, which translates into 4 seats in the parliament.
 
PAR lost 4 seats in the parliament, making it the party that lost the most seats during this election. The FOL party lost its only seat in parliament. FOL’s leader, Mr. Anthony Godett, announced that he is now leaving politics.

The voter turnout was at a record high of 74.5%. According to the President of the Supreme Electoral Council ("Konseho Supremo Elektoral"), the most recent record high voter turnout was in 1979.
 
The former Schotte I Government (MFK/PS/MAN) now has 12 seats in parliament: one more seat than in the 2010 election. However, PS now has more votes than MFK.
