Suriname drafts plan to tackle human trafficking

PARAMARIBO, Suriname--Authorities here have drafted a multi-annual plan to fight human trafficking.
Glen van der San of the Justice Ministry's Trafficking in Persons Workgroup has announced that the first draft of the plan, entitled "Route plan Suriname Enforcing Human Trafficking 2012-2016- is ready for discussions with other actors.
"Official talks are planned with Guyana for instance," Van der San said, adding that "Suriname is serious about tackling this worldwide problem" and that the talks with the country's neighbours and organizations that deal with the subject of human trafficking should kickoff before year's end.
The announcement of Suriname's plans to combat human trafficking has come on the heels of a recent report by the Brazilian Justice Ministry that claims that Suriname is an important transit point from Brazil for people trafficking networks.
The report, that was written with support and information supplied by the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), suggests that the criminal organizations use Suriname to ship Brazilian women to Holland; it said at least 133 Brazilians have fallen victim to the networks since 2005.
