Advisory Council launches its Website as transparency tool

PHILIPSBURG--To promote transparency and openness in the work of the Advisory Council was the reason given by council chairman Governor Eugene Holiday for the launch of the council's Website on Tuesday afternoon. The Website
www.councilofadvicesxm.com is only in Dutch, but efforts are being made to have all content also available in English soon.

Holiday told the press at the launch, which coincided with the first extraordinary meeting of the council at the offices on E.C. Richardson Street, that the council challenged itself every day and every time it sent out correspondence on its letterhead with the motto "Strengthening Democracy." The Website gives "greater content to the motto," he said.

The governor sees the Website, like the council, "playing a critical role" in upholding and strengthening the country's constitutional democracy. This goal is reached by making information about the advices given to government by the council and other information available on the Website.

Recent developments in the community have "underscored the need for information" being provided to the population, information such as the new Website can provide, said the governor, pointing to the political shakeups.

Advisory Council Deputy Chairwoman Mavis Brooks-Salmon commended Website coordinator Deshanna Richardson for her work in designing the site. She described Richardson as "a young, dynamic webmaster."

Richardson also designed the Websites for both the former Antillean House and The St. Maarten House in The Hague. It was through those design jobs that Brooks-Salmon came into contact with her work.

Richardson encouraged other St. Maarteners with information technology skills to consider returning home as she had done, to build the country's information technology (IT) platform. She said professionals in the IT field should come home and "help bring St. Maarten into the 21st century," and aid in making government services accessible online.
