Political nominations possible in the state settlement

The General Audit Office Netherlands Antilles (Arna) has ‘serious objections’ against the stipulation in article 67 of the concept-state settlement that was copied from the Dutch constitution.

According to Arna, with this stipulation, the interpretation of the Netherlands Antilles in the National Ordinance General Audit Office Netherlands Antilles 2002, indicating political appointments are not desired, is restricted.  In this organic law is stipulated that with appointments of members of the general audit office, the list of nominations of the General Audit Office has a binding character.  “In the future, Parliament will be free to make a political nomination for appointing members of the General Audit Office, thus pushing aside the list of nominations of the General Audit Office.”  Arna is wondering whether ‘political appointments for life at the audit office would prove helpful to Land Curacao and this institution‘.

The Audit Office alerted the Governing Body of Curacao in a letter dated November 5.  They have not received a reaction yet on that letter and also the Island Council was sent a letter on November 26.
