New Chief Prosecutor expert in money-laundering cases

PHILIPSBURG--"I would not be surprised if St. Maarten would have a desire for extra capacity to detect financial crimes. It is the same in the Netherlands. Investigating financial crimes is not considered sexy and is often viewed as complicated or less exciting," said new Chief Prosecutor Rick Noordhoek.

He will take up his new job as per March 1, but will be leaving the Netherlands early February to get himself accustomed to his new working environment in St. Maarten.

Noordhoek is looking forward to a new challenge in a new place, he said on Caribisch Netwerk Website.

"According to me, the Prosecutor's Office there is working well and has a reasonable number of staff members," he said.

Upon his arrival in St. Maarten, Noordhoek immediately wants to speak with the Prosecutor's Office staff for them to inform him about the current state of affairs. Only after that he wants to see where he can put accents, or implement improvements or changes if these are deemed necessary.

"The President of the Joint Court of Justice informed me that the timely delivery of court documents could be improved. I will be looking into that," Noordhoek said.

The new Chief Prosecutor, who will be taking over from acting Chief Prosecutor Hans Wesselink, is a specialist in money laundering cases.

"I don't know if a prosecutor has been especially assigned to cases like these, but I could offer my support and contributions, I think," he said.

Noordhoek agrees with a number of themes in the Prosecutor's Office's year plan for 2014, such as extra focus on youth and victim care and more rapid prosecution. He also wants to look into the lack of cell space for juveniles.
