Call for a media law on Curacao

WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao needs to work on introducing a media law as soon as possible, according to a resolution adopted at the end of a debate organised by political movement "Hustisia Sosial Kòrsou"(HSK). Journalist Yves Cooper and newsreader Dwight Rudolphina were present as members of a panel that discussed the topic with those present.

The need to regulate mass communication whereby information is available without any form of censure was included in the resolution.

The media law mentioned must make a clear distinction between the business and editorial parts of the press. Commercial influence on the news must be prohibited, according to the authors of the resolution.

There must also be rules for new social media on the island and criteria that all employees of the media are to meet. This is necessary to guarantee a better news provision to the people.

Also the legal position of journalists, reporters and newsreaders must be regulated in this new law. The final goal is that only those who meet the minimum standards for media employees as laid down in the law are allowed to work at the local media, according to the resolution adopted by HSK.

The latter requires courses and training for local media employees, as well as the possibility of a university programme for journalists.
