Dest court hearing now set for June 25

PHILIPSBURG--The court hearing for St. Maarten Tourism Bureau Interim Director Edward Dest has been set for June 25, Prosecutor Tineke Kamps said on Monday. The hearing will be a "regie-zitting" – a procedure where, for example, the defence can request more investigation on certain points, Kamps said.

The date of the actual court hearing has not yet been set.

It has been more than three years since a criminal complaint against Dest, then Head of Marketing at the bureau, and former bureau director Regina Labega was filed by former head of Government's Finance Department Bas Roorda on November 25, 2010.

Kamps said no date had been set yet for Labega and she could not give an indication as to when this would be set.
The criminal complaint was filed weeks after former Minister of Tourism Franklin Meyers suspended Dest and Labega on November 3, 2010, on the basis of what Meyers dubbed "discrepancies." Those discrepancies never have been clarified publicly. Speculation pointed to financial discrepancies found with funds allotted to the Tourism Bureau.

Meyers withdrew their suspensions on December 2, 2010, on the basis of insufficient grounds/lack of evidence on government's side. He indicated that government's investigation would continue and reserved the right to impose disciplinary measures should they become necessary.

Meyers and Roorda are no longer in office.
