Court postpones trial of fraudulent police officer

PHILIPSBURG--The Court of First Instance on Monday postponed the hearing in the case against police officer M.L.R.S. (41) until September 8.

The hearing was scheduled for Monday afternoon, but the Judge had no other option but to postpone the hearing after it was established that neither the suspect nor his lawyer were present.

The police officer is suspected of having committed fraud, forgery and mistreatment.

The charges were already read out by the Prosecutor during a previous hearing on May 19. During that hearing, Prosecutor Maarten Noordzij said S. was charged with mistreatment of a person on December 22, 2011.

He also is charged with fraud and forgery in purchasing airplane tickets to Canada and the Dominican Republic with bounced cheques between May 18 and May 29, 2012.

The case was postponed in May upon the request of attorney-at-law Paula Janssen, because she had had insufficient time to study the case file and prepare the case in conjunction with her client.

In the meantime, however, Sulvaran and Peterson law office has ceased working on behalf of the defendant, as the firm is also involved in the representation of one of S.'s victims.

It remained unclear on Monday, which law office will be taking up S.'s defence. It is believed the suspect is currently residing in Curaçao.
