Dennis: Country should still pursue own attorney-general

PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten should still pursue the appointment of its own attorney-general instead of sharing one with Curaçao, says Justice Minister Dennis Richardson. "If little Anguilla can have an attorney-general, why not us?" he questioned.

The possibility to lobby for the establishment of a full attorney-general domiciled in St. Maarten will come when the Kingdom laws and agreements related to country status are reviewed later this year.

Richardson said with the attorney-general immersed in Curaçao, it is easy "to confuse the situation of Curaçao with St. Maarten."

The existing situation where the attorney-general lives in Curaçao and only visits St. Maarten for meetings is not workable. The situation is "not to my satisfaction," he told Members of Parliament (MPs) in Monday's continued discussions on the law to establish an integrity chamber for the country.

The structure within which the attorney-general works also leaves much to be desired, said Richardson. The attorney-general reports to the three justice ministers of the Kingdom, the Netherlands, Curaçao and St. Maarten. It should not be that the attorney-general discusses St. Maarten issues with the Dutch justice minister, he noted.
