Transparency Intl assessment of country nears completion

PHILIPSBURG--The National Integrity System (NIS) assessment of St. Maarten being compiled by Transparency International (TI) is nearing completion. A launch date for the report and its findings will be set in the coming weeks.

"We are currently in the process of finalising the report and are having some last conversations with key stakeholders regarding their input. We will also start arranging the details of the launch in the coming weeks," TI Communications Coordinator Natalie Baharav advised The Daily Herald via e-mail.

The purpose of the NIS study of St. Maarten is to assess the systemic corruption risks the island faces and to produce a set of recommendations on how to mitigate those risks in the future.

Those recommendations can then be used by actors in civil society, government, media and the private sector for promoting integrity in St. Maarten.

An NIS assessment evaluates the anti-corruption efficacy of all principal institutions and actors that form a state, including all branches of government, the media, the public and private sectors, and civil society.

Through participatory consultations with local stakeholders and a detailed analysis of national efforts to stamp out corruption, it provides a framework that local organisations and citizens can use to analyse both a given country's vulnerabilities to corruption and the effectiveness of national anti-corruption efforts.

Research for the St. Maarten assessment is being carried out in the country by a research team in dialogue with key stakeholders and actors from across various bodies of the public sector, the private sector and civil society. Transparency International has complete independence in all phases of the process, from initial research to final outcome and recommendations.
