Top professors in Curacao

For the seventeenth time, the best legal experts of the Kingdom gather to offer legal post graduate courses in Curaçao. From February 22 through 26, the University of the Netherlands Antilles and the Radboud University of Nijmegen organize three post-academic courses.

These so-called PAO-intensive courses are concluded with a symposium open to the public on the topic “Government and Liability”. The target group of the courses are (experienced) lawyers, notaries, bank lawyers and corporate lawyers, and members of the judiciary. The courses have already been very popular with this target group, also in the Netherlands, for years. Between forty and eighty Dutch legal experts and an average of approximately fifty legal professionals from the Netherlands Antilles participate.

The topics this year are “Highlights law of property and law of obligations” and “Current issues corporate law”. A “Master class real estate” will also be offered. Apart from disputes on property boundaries, prescription, and discrepancies between the purchase deed and the deed of transfer of title, in this time of worldwide financial crisis extensive attention is also paid to current affairs such as the recovery position of creditors of real estate owners. The course “Current issues corporate law” will pay attention to the radical changes to come, both in Dutch corporate law and in Antilles corporate law. The course “Highlights law of property and law of obligations” mainly pays attention to the most recent legal precedents in this area. Principal teachers are the professors S.E. Bartels, S.C.J.J. Kortmann, F.B.M. Kunneman and G. Van Solinge. They are responsible for the content of the program. In addition, professors N.E.D. Faber, A.S. Hartkamp and P. van Schilfgaarde, dr. P. Klik, Mrs. A.S. Gratama and Mr. F.W. Lunsingh Scheurleer will act as teachers.

The closing symposium “Government and Liability” deals with liability of the government as shareholder, liability of the Antilles financial supervisory official, and liability of the government for inadequate supervision by, inter alia, the bankruptcy judge in bankruptcies. It will be opened by the President of the University of the Netherlands Antilles, dr. R.E. Silberie. Speakers are Mr. K. Frielink. Prof. P. Van Schilfgaarde, dr. B.M. Mezas and Prof. S.C.J.J. Kortmann. The day’s chairman is Prof. Frank Kunneman. It takes place on Friday afternoon at the auditorium of the UNA.
