Top professors at UNA

The University of the Netherlands Antilles and the Radboud University of Nijmegen have organized three post-academic courses last week.

These so-called PAO-intensive courses were concluded with a symposium open to the public on the topic “Government and Liability”.

The target group of the courses are (experienced) lawyers, notaries, bank lawyers and corporate lawyers, and members of the judiciary. The courses have already been very popular with this target group, also in the Netherlands, for years. Between forty and eighty Dutch legal experts and an average of approximately fifty legal professionals from the Netherlands Antilles have participated.

The topics this year were “Highlights law of property and law of obligations” and “Current issues corporate law”. A “Master class real estate” was also offered. Apart from disputes on property boundaries, prescription, and discrepancies between the purchase deed and the deed of transfer of title, in this time of worldwide financial crisis extensive attention was also paid to current affairs such as the recovery position of creditors of real estate owners. The course “Current issues corporate law” paid attention to the radical changes to come, both in Dutch corporate law and in Antilles corporate law. The course “Highlights law of property and law of obligations” mainly paid attention to the most recent legal precedents in this area. Principal teachers were the professors S.E. Bartels, S.C.J.J. Kortmann, F.B.M. Kunneman and G. Van Solinge. They have been responsible for the content of the program. In addition, professors N.E.D. Faber, A.S. Hartkamp and P. van Schilfgaarde, dr. P. Klik, Mrs. A.S. Gratama and Mr. F.W. Lunsingh Scheurleer acted as teachers.

The closing symposium “Government and Liability” dealt with liability of the government as shareholder, liability of the Antilles financial supervisory official, and liability of the government for inadequate supervision by, inter alia, the bankruptcy judge in bankruptcies. It was opened by the President of the University of the Netherlands Antilles, dr. R.E. Silberie. Speakers were Mr. K. Frielink. Prof. P. Van Schilfgaarde, dr. B.M. Mezas and Prof. S.C.J.J. Kortmann. The day’s chairman was Prof. Frank Kunneman.
