Agreement signed for renovation Courthouse Sint Maarten

PHILIPSBURG--Last week the Joint Court of Justice signed a construction agreement with Leeward Island Construction Company LICCOM for repairs and renovation of the historical Courthouse in the heart of Philipsburg.

The agreement concerns phase one of the Courthouse’s reconstruction, which entails the repair of damage caused by Hurricane Irma in September 2017 and renovation of the outer walls and the Courthouse entrance. The Courthouse roof will be renovated at a later date.

The Courthouse was built in 1793, destroyed by a hurricane and rebuilt in 1825. It first served as home to Captain John Philips, founder and namesake of Philipsburg and later became a fire station, a post office and the Philipsburg City Hall.

Founded in 1996, LICCOM is a contractor with extensive experience in St. Maarten. The firm is very knowledgeable where it comes to monumental buildings such as the historic Courthouse, the Joint Court said Monday. “The Joint Court is very happy that after a long period of preparations the renovations can move forward,” the Court stated.
