Prosecutor’s Office concerned about ongoing lawyers’ strike

PHILIPSBURG--Chief Prosecutor Jeroen Steenbrink has sent a letter to Minister of Justice Cornelius de Weever in which he expressed the Prosecutor’s Office’s concern about the ongoing strike of pro-bono lawyers and the “enormous impact” this has on criminal justice.

Pro-bono lawyers St. Maarten continue strike as negotiations break down

PHILIPSBURG--The pro-bono lawyers who have been on strike since May 18 due to non-payment of fees due to them will continue their strike, as talks between the Ministry of Justice and St. Maarten Bar Association Criminal Lawyers Section Chairman Cor Merx broke down last Friday.

Draft STA law seeks to cover quality control, licensing of tour operators

PHILIPSBURG - A proposed law to establish the long-in-the-pipelines St. Maarten Tourism Authority (STA) foundation as an independent governing body ZBO with the ability to issue tour operator’s licences, review destination product quality control and general standards for tourism operators (and staff) in the form of licences, certification and training has drawn heavy criticism from Oyster Bay Beach Resort (OBBR).

Hof akkoord met schikking van 1,3 miljard aan Fortis-aandeelhouders

AMSTERDAM - Na 10 jaar lang onderhandelingen en gerechtelijke procedures gaat het gerechtshof in Amsterdam akkoord met een megaschikking: de Belgische verzekeraar Ageas, voorheen Fortis Holding, moet gedupeerde aandeelhouders betalen. Het gaat in totaal om 1,3 miljard euro.
