SEI a helping hand for environmental requirements Smoc

The dragging lawsuit, in which the foundation Clean Environment in Curacao (Smoc) is trying to force the government to make the Isla-refinery comply with the licence under the Nuisance Act, continues tomorrow. Question is whether the case is out of date now that the BC has recently signed the Social Economic Initiative (SEI), in which she commits herself to ‘force or bring’ the Isla to comply with the standards.

Full pro bono rankings announced

This year, LATINLAWYER Magazine has launched pro bono rankings for firms in the region, to allow clients and competitors to compare firms' commitment to providing pro bono work.

LL published a ranking table of the top firms for pro bono commitment in the region, with the top 50 firms listed.

New Lt. Governments Bonaire and Saba

Glen Thodé and Jonathan Johnson are the new lt. governments in Bonaire and Saba. The Minister Council for the Kingdom approved the nominations today. Thodé succeeds Herbert Domacassé, whose term of office runs out on October 24 and Johnson replaces Sidney Sorton effective July 2.

Judge Luis Alberto José de Lannoy remembered

Through several ceremonies on Curacao and St. Maarten members of the legal community and many others paid their last respects to Judge Luis Alberto José de Lannoy.
On St. Maarten a ceremony was held at the Philipsburg Court of first instance where Judge de Lannoy served for many years. The late Judge de Lannoy (57) died of cancer on May 26th 2008.

HBN Law 70 years of law practice

Law firm HBN Law is celebrating 70 years of law practice.
The HBN Law Firm is the largest law firm in the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. It is also the oldest law firm in the Netherlands Antilles, founded in 1938 by Mr. S.W. van der Meer. The name of the firm has changed several times through the years and has been changed in 2005 into HBN Law.

Michiel Gorsira has rejoined VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne as per May 1 2008, after a 10 year stay in the Netherlands. Until 1997 he was a partner of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne on Curacao. In the Netherlands Michiel Gorsira was a partner of Simmons & Simmons (previously named Trenité van Doorne), where he was head of the litigation department.
