Draft law to write off old tax now with Advisory Council

PHILIPSBURG--The draft law to permanently write off taxes owed by residents and businesses prior to 2006 is with the Advisory Council for review, said caretaker Finance Minister Roland Tuitt. He has been working on removing the old debts from the books of the Receiver's Office for several months now.

Tuitt said on People's Voice on PJD2 Radio Sunday that he has already signed a ministerial decree on the writing off of the back taxes, and that decree was published last week. The Receiver's Office has been informed of the ministerial decree, and is obliged to remove any old debts from the account of the taxpayer.

Taxpayers can visit the Receiver's Office to ensure that the back taxes are structurally "parked up" as the minister had explained earlier in the year.

When the Advisory Council completes its review of the draft law, it will be sent back to government for changes and adjustments, if any, before it is forwarded to parliament for debate and approval. Approval of the draft law by parliament will mean that debts will be permanently removed from the books.

Tuitt had placed the amount of back taxes owed for 2006 and prior to that in the billions of guilders.

"But these amounts don't mean anything, because they are fictitious. Most of these amounts have been calculated on the basis as if everyone, who did not file his or her taxes got an assessment of 150 thousand guilders or more. So the amount, I am sure, is in the billions, but it doesn't mean anything," the minister had said earlier in the year.
