WILLEMSTAD - De internationale financiële sector op het eiland blijft krimpen en zal flink aan betekenis inboeten indien deze negatieve trend niet wordt gestopt. Tijdens een strategische sessie op zaterdag 9 november hebben het CIFA bestuur en management de volgende redenen geïdentificeerd voor de neerwaartse trend.

Vorige week zijn acht voormalige commissarissen van de Nederlandse woningcorporatie Vestia voor een bedrag van 2 miljard euro aansprakelijk gesteld. Reden? Ze hebben zitten dutten terwijl de bestuurders van Vestia (onder wie Eric Staal) ongehinderd een zelfde bedrag hebben verspeeld met zogenaamde renteswaps (‘derivaten’).

WILLEMSTAD – Op vrijdag 15 november vond in de aula van de UNA (Universiteit Nederlands Antillen) de officiële ceremonie plaats waarbij zowel de nieuwe naam "University of Curaçao Dr. Moises da Costa Gomez" als het nieuwe logo officieel gepresenteerd is. In het bijzijn van zowel de Gouverneur, mevrouw George-Wout, de interim Minister van Onderwijs, Wetenschap, Cultuur en Sport , drs. Ivar Asjes, sprak Rector Magnificus, dr. Francis de Lanoy, de aanwezigen toe.
Dutch recession ends

NETHERLANDS - With 0.1% growth in the Dutch economy last quarter, new statistics released by the CBS show the Dutch recession has come to an end. The estimated growth was demonstrated in the third quarter of 2013, compared to the previous quarter.
GHL Group Takes Over Both Kura Hulanda Hotels

WILLEMSTAD – Kura Hulanda Inc. has signed an agreement with GHL Hotels from Colombia to operate both hotels in Curacao, Kura Hulanda Otrabanda and Kura Hulanda Lodge in West Point, starting 1 December of this year. This is according to representatives of both organizations. Both hotels will start operating again on the date mentioned.
Navarro stapt niet op naar aanleiding van Rapport-Pretu

WILLEMSTAD – Minister van Justitie Nelson Navarro legt in de Staten verantwoording af over de dood van Luigi ‘Pretu’ Florentina en het onderzoek daarnaar. Pretu was de tweede verdachte in de moord op Wiels. In september werd zijn lichaam levenloos in zijn cel in Barber aangetroffen.
Huiszoeking onderzoek “Bientu”

WILLEMSTAD - In het kader van het onderzoek “Bientu” heeft gisteravond, onder leiding van een Rechter-commissaris en een Officier van Justitie, een huiszoeking plaatsgevonden bij het hoofdkantoor van een nummerkantoor van R.d.S. Hierbij zijn onder andere documenten in het belang van het onderzoek in beslag genomen.

THE HAGUE - De staking van advocaten vandaag tegen de plannen van staatssecretaris Teeven van Veiligheid en Justitie met de gefinancierde rechtsbijstand, is rustig verlopen. Advocaten dienden tientallen aanhoudingsverzoeken in bij de gerechten, die voor een flink deel werden toegewezen.

Life sentences and conditional release found unconstitutional

PHILIPSBURG--An historical event occurred yesterday in the Courthouse when the Constitutional Court of St. Maarten delivered its judgement in the first-ever case filed by Ombudsman Nilda Arduin. Arduin had filed seven complaints with respect to the Criminal Code. Four of these complaints were considered well-founded.

PARAMARIBO--A third charge of "attempting to support a terrorist organisation" has been added to the indictment of arrested President's son Dino Bouterse. Manhattan District Attorney Preet Bharara alleged yesterday that Dino, who is being held on cocaine and weapons-trafficking charges, was planning to help Hezbollah attack the US.

PHILIPSBURG – The Court in First Instance has found Corinne de Tullio-Stamm guilty of mismanagement and holds her responsible for the complete deficit in the bankruptcy of Yordan Busarov’s Evmolpia Private Foundation. The court sentenced De Tullio-Stamm to pay the trustees in the bankruptcy, Hendrich Seferina and Maarten Le Poole of HBN Law an advance of 200,000 guilders on the deficit that could run into the millions of dollars.

RBC Bank takes its distance from Corallo-companies

PHILIPSBURG – RBC Royal Bank does not have to restore its relationship with Francesco Corallo’s Atlantis World Management NV and two related companies, the Court in First Instance ruled. RBC terminated the relationship due to the negative publicity surrounding Corallo about his alleged links to the Italian mafia and his possible involvement in criminal behavior.

THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD – Lucille Andrea George-Wout is the first female governor of the island as per today. Today she has been sworn in by the King of the Dutch Kingdom, Hiss Majesty King Willem Alexander. In mid-November, her governorship will be confirmed in a public meeting of the Parliament of Curacao.

PARAMARIBO – Surinaamse advocaten hebben alarm geslagen over de stand van zaken van de rechtspraak in Suriname. Er is volgens hen sprake van een noodsituatie. Dat schreef de Surinaamse Orde van Advocaten vrijdag in een brief aan de minister van Justitie en Politie en het Hof van Justitie.
Parents lose court case, 13-year-old must shave

PHILIPSBURG--A 13-year-old boy, whose parents filed a court case against Learning Unlimited (LU) over a dispute as to whether the boy should shave off his moustache, has been ordered to follow the regulations set by the school. His parents lost the court case they filed against the school, and were ordered to pay NAf. 1,000 in costs.
George-Wout nieuwe Gouverneur van Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD - Mevrouw L.A. (Lucille) George-Wout wordt de nieuwe gouverneur van Curaçao. De Rijksministerraad heeft op voorstel van minister Plasterk van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties besloten haar voor te dragen voor benoeming. De benoeming gaat in op 4 november 2013.
