Hoe noem je 100 advocaten op de zeebodem? Precies……. een goed begin! Al eeuwenlang zijn advocaten het mikpunt van spot en figureren zij, vrijwel uitsluitend negatief geportretteerd, in grappen en grollen in allerhande talen en in verschillende culturen. In spreekwoorden, gezegden, zegswijzen en uitdrukkingen figureren advocaten aanzienlijk minder, sterker nog komen zij er zeer bekiiad van af.

Zoals wel vaker dwaalden mijn gedachten af naar het bestaan van een relatie tussen alledaagse zaken en het recht. Ditmaal bevond ik mij staand voor een urinoir op de vijfde etage in de Bijenkorf in Amsterdam in gedachten verzonken op zoek naar de relatie tussen urineren en recht.

Corporate Governance Council Sint Maarten calls it quits

PHILIPSBURG -  All members of the Corporate Governance Council have resigned from their position since yesterday. In a press release, Chairman Louis Duzanson expressed the council’s dissatisfaction with the way the government has handled its mandate, and with the way it has been removing members “one by one.”

Dutch Caribbean Legal Portal’s annual Top 25 Law Firms Curaçao shows that the largest law firms on Curaçao got even bigger in 2013. The legal website bases its ranking on the number of active attorneys at law per island. Rankings are published per jurisdiction, accumulating in a total Dutch Caribbean list.

Bijkerk verliest kort geding over vrije vestiging

KRALENDIJK – De Caribische eilanden in het Koninkrijk moeten alles in het werk stellen om de interne grenzen tussen de eilanden af te breken. Dat vindt advocaat Michiel Bijkerk. Bijkerk verloor vrijdag een kort geding dat hij namens een Curaçaoënaar heeft aangespannen. De Curaçaoënaar wilde toestemming krijgen om zich vrij te vestigen op Bonaire.

PHILIPSBURG--Windward Islands Civil Servants Union/Private Sector Union (WICSU/PSU) took government to Court over the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2011 and 2012. WICSU/PSU's lawyer in the injunction, Monique Hofman of Bermon Law Office, said the union was challenging government over the non-indexation of COLA for 2011.

Groeneveldt presents proposal to establish small claims court

PHILIPSBURG - Attorney Reynold Groeneveldt has presented a proposal to Parliament via the Permanent Committee for Justice to establish a small claims court to handle claims of up to NAf. 5,000 in an expedient and uncomplicated way. He outlined his proposal that requires no lawyers and a first step of mediation to the committee on Thursday morning in Parliament House.

Plasterk urged to adapt voting rights law proposal for islands

THE HAGUE--The First Chamber of the Dutch Parliament, the Senate, on Tuesday requested Dutch Minister of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations Ronald Plasterk to include an Electoral College in the law proposal to amend the Dutch Constitution which is needed to arrange the voting rights of citizens of Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba.

Curaçaose zaak. Gelet op de in cassatie overgelegde stukken acht de Hoge Raad voldoende aannemelijk dat het griffierecht voor het hoger beroep was voldaan. De door het hof uitgesproken vervallenverklaring wegens niet-tijdige betaling wordt vernietigd.
