The seas round the Cayman Islands may be blue, the sand white and the coral reefs a rainbow, but to the OECD, an economic group of rich countries, the Cayman Islands are grey. On May 14th the OECD ruled to keep the British colony on its list of unco-operative tax havens.

BZSE largest law firm on Sint Maarten

As per the 1 January 2009 the law offices Bergman Bloem & Bergman (BBB) and ZwanikkenSnowEssed (ZSE) - have merged. The new firm is called BergmanZwanikkenSnowEssed (BZSE). With this merger BZSE has become the largest law firm on the Dutch side of St. Maarten.

7-Eleven vs. 7-Alive

In its decision of 8 May 2009 the Supreme Court of The Netherlands (“Hoge Raad”) in The Hague largely dismissed the conclusion of the Advocate-General and reversed the appeal decision of the Court of Appeals of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba in proceedings on the merits started by 7-Eleven, Inc. against a local convenience store in St. Maarten that is using a logo similar to its famous 7-Eleven logo (see photos).

No infringement of exclusive rights roadmap

Kris Kras Publishing may continue the distribution of the Smart D®iving Road Map on the island. That is what the Common Court of Justice decided Tuesday in appeal. The court deemed the road map not to be a ‘slavish imitation’ of the product that competitor Caribbean Cartographics distributes.

The trading results of the "Big Four" , De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, Houthoff Buruma, Loyens & Loeff en NautaDutilh, have recently been made public. How were the results of autumn and winter 2008? Very diverse. The results can be called positive, but do show the beginning of a decline for 2009.

Niet dat de situatie van de advocatuur op de Antillen de redactie van Mr. nu dagelijks bezighoudt, maar we kijken met een zekere sympathie naar de bezigheden van de confrères aldaar. Onlangs nog publiceerden publiceerden we in Mr. een interview met de voormalig deken aldaar en tevens collega-blogger Eric de Vries. En een paar weken geleden mailde mijn voormalig Kluwer-collega Mark Kater, die vervolgens communicatieblokhoofd werd bij Allen & Overy en uiteindelijk zijn vrouw achterna emigreerde naar Bonaire in het vaste voornemen zich daar alleen nog maar met kitesurfen bezig te houden.

Usually, the government or one of its agencies or the business community says how the economy is doing. There is a chance that others will then react and say that it is not true. Op 15 mei 2009 keurde de bevolking van Curaçao het resultaat van de Ronde Tafelconferentie van 15 december 2008 goed. Daarmee is Curaçao een stap dichter bij het worden van een autonoom land binnen het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. En kan worden begonnen met het, vanuit een gezonde startpositie, aanpakken van de problemen op Curaçao. Daarmee is ook aan de andere eilanden van de Antillen het groene licht gegeven de door hen gekozen route voort te zetten.

Chamber of Commerce: "Without debt construction: doom-scenario-threat"

“Without debt reconstruction, Curaçao will experience a true doom-scenario with serious social-democratic consequences”, the Chamber of Commerce (Kamer van Koophandel) states in a press release, reverting to the referendum coming Friday. The press release contains an advice to the Board of Governors from the Chamber as an advisory body of the local business, trade and industry.
