Victims Stanford hold Central Bank responsible

ORANJESTAD –– On behalf of two clients on Aruba and Curaçao, law office Van Giffen wants to bring charges against the Central Bank of  Aruba (CBA) on account of failing supervision in the fraude case of Stanford International Bank. The clients hold the CBA responsible in view of an article in the Amigoe of February 19th, where co-workers of the bank indicated to be worried about Stanford since the law on credit institutes (LTK) was implemented ten years ago.

Spigt comes with new initiative

Lawyer Leo Spigt (Spigthoff) has introduced a new initiative on the Dutch market for legal services. Under the name Legal Legion he and two partners started a new firm that aims at legal work that is under the level of a standard law firm. Work that at this moment is being done by standard law firms or through outsourcing of lawyers, but that might as well be done by less qualified lawyers.

Law on maritime borders passed

Law firms in the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba give legal assistance to victims in Stanford fraud

US billionaire Allen Stanford has been accused of fraud by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). According to the SEC, Stanford International Bank domiciled on the island of Antigua sold roughly $8 Billion of “so-called” ‘certificates of deposit’ to investors by promising improbable and unsubstantiated high interest rates.

Council of Ministers agrees with Statute Law Police

The Council of Minister for the Kingdom has agreed with the consensus-statute law Police of Curaçao, St. Maarten and the BES-islands (Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba) and with the Statute Law Council for the maintenance of law and order.  Both bills will now be sent to the State Council for the Kingdom for advice.

Judgment Churandy deferred

Judgment in the matter that the Antillean sprinter Churandy Martina had instituted with the International Sports Court of Justice in Lausanne, has again been postponed. The Court of Justice will now render judgement on 13 March. Director Remco Tevreden of the Netherlands Antillean Olympic Committee (Naoc) couldn't say what the exact reason for this new postponement was.

Columbus takes Government of the Netherlands Antilles to Court

Telecom-minister Maurice Adriaens (FOL) indicated that Columbus Networks Curaçao has instituted legal proceedings against the Government of the Netherlands Antilles. She did this to force the issuing of a new concession for international telephony and internet in Curacao. The Government has obtained a period of three weeks to argue why there is no response yet on the petition that was submitted by Columbus already in 2007.

Warning against counterfeit

In January 2009, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne published an advertisement in several local newspapers announcing, on behalf of American Eagle Outfitters (‘AEO’) that anyone selling, offering for sale, stocking, or otherwise handling counterfeit products bearing any trademarks from AEO may risk legal action.
