In 2012, Dutch Caribbean Legal Portal (“DCLP”) reported on regional and international firms active in the Dutch Caribbean. DCLP reported that the Dutch Caribbean in fact holds only two law firms that qualify as true regional firms.

De huurcommissie en het huidige recht

Een stukje geschiedenis

In 1939 werd voor het eerst wet – en regelgeving ingevoerd met de taak toe te zien op de huurovereenkomsten op Curaçao. Deze regelgeving werd de ‘Huurcommissie-regeling’ genoemd en was te vinden vanaf artikel 1564 t/m 1612 in de zevende titel van boek 7A van het Burgerlijk Wetboek. De Huurcommissie-regeling is inmiddels vervallen, maar wel deels gemoderniseerd overgenomen in de vierde titel ‘Huur’ van het zevende boek van het Burgerlijk Wetboek. De vernieuwde huurregels zijn per 1 januari 2012 in werking getreden bij de Landsverordening huur (PB. 2011, 68).

Quality Rankings Chambers voor advocatenkantoren Curacao 2014

De internationale juridische uitgever Chambers & Partners heeft op 13 maart 2014 zijn jaarlijkse wereldwijde ranglijst van advocatenkantoren uitgebracht. Deze op referenties gebaseerde ranglijst biedt een onafhankelijk oordeel voor organisaties die advocaten willen inschakelen. In de editie van 2014 krijgen zes Nederlands Caribische advocatenkantoren een vermelding. Zoals ook in 2013 voeren VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne en Spigt Dutch Caribbean de lijst aan.

International publisher Chambers & Partners published its global ranking of law firms Chambers Global for 2014.

DCLP Top 10 Law Firms Bonaire 2014

Dutch Caribbean Legal Portal stelt jaarlijks een lijst samen van de Top 25 advocatenkantoren van de Dutch Caribbean en van de afzonderlijke eilanden Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire en St. Maarten. De basis daarvoor is het aantal advocaten, exclusief fiscalisten, notarieel medewerkers en para-legals.

Heden is de DCLP Top 10 Advocatenkantoren Bonaire 2013 gepubliceerd.

Bientu case continued: "If he repent, forgive him"

As already mentioned in an earlier newspost Minister Elmer Wilsoe (Justice) has sent a new letter – dated 22 May 2012 - to the Parliament of Curacao in which he declares that the Bientu-research should be stopped because Robbie dos Santos makes use of the new voluntary disclosure scheme – the so called Repentance Regulation (Inkeerregeling).

The importance of sharing information

The internet is an important source for finding legal information.
Governments, institutions and individuals have put legal resources on the World Wide Web. The number of statutes, court decisions and other legal documents available on the internet grows daily.
Internet is an ideal and cost-effective place to find a recent court decision, to track current legislative developments or to find out about any companies activities.

Dutch Caribbean Legal Portal asked mr. Karel Frielink, President of the Curacao Bar Association, to give his view on the importance of sharing legal information.

International and regional Dutch Caribbean law firms

The Dutch Caribbean holds only two law firms that qualify as true regional firms. These firms are VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne and HBN Law, both with their main office in Curaçao and further offices in Aruba, Bonaire and St. Maarten.  These firms are ranked in terms of size (number of lawyers) at respectively no. 1 (VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne) and no. 2 (HBN Law) in the Dutch Caribbean Legal Portal (“DCLP”) 2012 law firm ranking.

Special tax regime for the BES Islands

Mr. Prem Radhakishun from Prem Radhakishun Advocaten at Amsterdam, talked about the new tax regime on the BES Islands on Radio 1 NL with Peter Kavelaars, Professor of Fiscal Economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, and Alex Brenninkmeijer, the National Ombudsman. DCLP took the liberty to report and summarize the interview and asked mr. Emile Steevensz of Certa Legal Tax Dutch Caribbean to comment on this issue.
