Committee buckles down to the parking of not-carried over tasks

A small committee with members from the Netherlands and the Land Netherlands Antilles must come at the end of this month with a proposal on where to park the tasks that are not yet carried over to the new entities at the time of the official commencement of the new political status and the dismantling of the Land Netherlands Antilles.

Information campaign government starts next week

The information campaign of the government for the referendum on the political future of Curacao, will start next week, said Commissioner Zita Jesus-Leito (General Affairs, PAR) yesterday during the first press conference of the Governing Body (BC) this year.   According to Jesus-Leito, the referendum has the highest priority for the BC at this moment.

Upper House wants to inspect the political process during their visit

Following on the semi-annual parliamentary Deliberation Kingdom Relations in Aruba, an Upper House delegation will pay all the islands of the Neth.Antilles a working visit from January 10 through 19.  They do this because the process of the political renewal in 2009 enters a new parliamentary phase.

Velcro stock buyback proposed

Velcro Industries NV is offering to buy back all of its remaining stock for $21 per share, the company announced Thursday. About 95 percent of the company is owned by Cohere Limited, which instituted proceedings last September in the Netherlands Antilles, where the company is headquartered, to acquire the remaining 5 percent for the same price.

Cft: Pension scheme reform national civil servants point of interest

The College financial supervision (Cft) reported on the 2009 budget of the Land Netherlands Antilles this week. The Cft decided that the budget meets the standards to a satisfactory extent, but that a number of issues need to be improved. The most important point of interest is the intended reformation of the pension scheme for national civil servants.

Fiscal deal with Jamaica

The Netherlands Antilles continue their course for entering treaties with well-chosen countries to prevent double taxation. Especially the Caribbean region receives great attention.  State secretary Alex Rosaria (Finance, PNP) emphasizes that the Antilles are in the first place Caribbean and must optimally cooperate with Caribbean nations for their (financial-social) survival.

Cft complete for the first time early February

The College financial supervision (Cft) will meet for the first time in a complete composition in the beginning of February. One member for Curacao, register accountant Ivan de Windt, and one for St. Maarten, Roland Tuitt was appointed last week. The Cft is now complete with these two members.

Bar critical about the authority to give instructions

The Curacao Bar Association has studied the concept of the law regarding the authority to give instructions and the introduction of just one central procurator-general and has sent a judicial advice on this to the State Council for the Kingdom that will soon report on this.

Further study pensions

Lt. Governor Lisa Dindial has suspended the announcement of the new pension scheme for Island Council members.  It is legally laid down that the Lt. Governor must promulgate a law no later than two weeks after the approval by the Island Council, so it becomes effective.

The Netherlands deposits 464 million guilders for restructuring debts of Antilles, CuraƧao and St. M

On November 10, 2007 the Netherlands opened an account with the Bank of the Netherlands Antilles for the debt restructuring and elimination of arrears in payments of the Country of the Netherlands Antilles and the Island Territories of Curaçao and St. Maarten. On December 11, 2008 an amount of 464 million guilders (203 million Euros) was deposited on this account for the elimination of the payment arrears of the Central Government, Curaçao and St. Maarten. On Friday, December 19, the Minister of Finance of the Netherlands Antilles, Ersilia de Lannooy, and the State Secretary of the Interior and Kingdom Affairs, Ank Bijleveld-Schouten, signed a confirmation of the arrangements made to such effect, at the Bank of the Netherlands Antilles in Curaçao.

Deliberation in Aruba on new status Antilles

Parliamentarians from the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles, and Aruba will meet in Aruba from January 5th through 9th during the semiannual Parliamentary Deliberation Kingdom Relations (POK).  The meeting is held as part of the collaboration between the three parliaments.

Cft receives budget from De Lannooy

The College financial supervision (Cft) agreed with Finance-minister Ersilia de Lannooy (PNP) that the College will receive the budget before Christmas. After the College receives the budget, it will provide it with a formal advice. The agreement is also that in due course, the Land will effect a proper transfer of duties to the BES-islands and the future countries Curacao and St. Maarten.

Cabinet abandons databank Antilleans

The separate databank for high-risk youths from the Antilles and Aruba is probably off for forever. The cabinet is now considering including these youths in an alarming system for all youths in the Netherlands that threaten to go off the rails.

Antilles municipalities included in the VIR in the first quarter of 2009

A number of arrangements were made to make the Cross Reference High-risk Youths (VIR) a fully fledged alternative for the cross reference Antillean high-risk youths, the VIA. The Antilles municipalities are going to be included in the VIR in the first quarter of 2009, so that the coordinators of the casus-deliberations can become aware of the high-risk youths’ data, indicated the ministry of Vrom.
