Schotte’s attorney Sulvaran wants to hear 47 witnesses in Babel Case

WILLEMSTAD – Yesterday, the pre-trial of the Babel case took place, which is the fraud case involving former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte and his partner Cicely van der Dijs as the suspects.

As expected, the prosecution and the defense of the accused were diametrically opposed. Peppie Sulvaran, attorney of Gerrit Schotte, of law firm Sulvaran & Peterson accused the prosecution to have undermined the lawsuit by illegally obtained evidence and political motives. Sulvaran still want to call 47witnesses who must substantiate his accusations against the prosecution.

On his part prosecutor Gert Rip called bribery and concealing an essential subversion of society.

Schotte and Van derDijs are accused of money laundering and forgery. As a Member of the Island Council, Schotte has received a large sum of money from the Italian casino boss Francesco Corallo twice. This in exchange for privileges for the casino group. In total it was more than 210,000 dollars. That money was laundered through the firms of Van der Dijs, according to the prosecution.

During the investigation of the case several house searches were carried out in Curaçao, Sint Maarten and even in Italy.

Gerrit Schotte and Cicely van der Dijs are represented in this case by attorney at law Eldon Sulvaran of law firm Sulvaran & Peterson.
