Francesco Corallo witness in Babel case against Gerrit Schotte

WILLEMSTAD -- During the pre-trial of the "Babel" fraud case with former Curaçao Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte (MFK) and his partner Cicely van der Dijs as suspects, Schotte's lawyer, Peppie Sulvaran requested no less than 46 witnesses to be heard.
 
On Thursday the judge rejected the majority because they contribute nothing to the case, but a number of people including casino boss Francesco Corallo may be called on to testify.
 
Sulvaran reiterated that the Babel investigation is a political conspiracy, in which the prosecution is involved. According to the defence attorney for this reason alone the case should be dismissed.
 
Schotte and Van der Dijs are accused of money laundering and forgery. As a Member of the then Island Council, Schotte had twice received a large sum of money from Corallo’s Atlantis Group, supposedly in exchange for privileges. In total it regarded more than US $210,000.
That money was laundered through the firms of the Van der Dijs family, according to the prosecution.
 
During the investigation several house searches were carried out in Curaçao, St. Maarten and even in Italy.
